Hurricane: A Dynamic Desktop Lighting Installation

Exploring the Contrast Between Dynamics and Statics

Light is both dynamic and static. Naai-Jung Shih, the renowned designer, seeks to capture this duality in his latest creation, Hurricane. This unique desktop lighting installation combines elements of dynamics and statics, opacity and transparency, solid and void, and defined boundaries and infinite reflectivity. With its captivating design, Hurricane is a true masterpiece that transforms any space into an artistic haven.

Shih's inspiration for Hurricane came from an exploration of free form and parametric design. As he delved deeper into his creative process, the concept of a hurricane emerged. The word "hurricane" perfectly encapsulates the local extreme weather conditions experienced in summer, and Shih sought to translate this energy and power into a tangible design.

What sets Hurricane apart from other lighting installations is its ability to switch characters in different conditions. When the light is on and the ambient light is dark, Hurricane creates an enchanting scene with its dynamic interplay of light and form. However, even when the light is off and the ambient light is on, Hurricane still captivates as a sculptural masterpiece. The double-layered boundaries represent the void field that holds the inter-reflection, creating a mesmerizing visual experience.

The realization of Hurricane involved the use of advanced technology and materials. Shih employed parametric adjustment of curvature and wave frequency to achieve the distinctive 3D shape of the hurricane. Each piece of the hurricane is meticulously crafted using the Fused Deposition Method (FDM) rapid-prototyping technology, resulting in a stunning white ABS finish. The installation is housed within two acrylic boxes, with the LED light positioned between them.

Measuring 30cm x 30cm x 30cm, Hurricane demands attention with its striking presence. Its unique design and metaphorical representation make it a conversation starter in any space. The upward light projection simulates the force that drives the elements of different shapes and orientations in turbulence, creating a visually captivating experience.

Throughout the design process, Shih faced several challenges. One of the primary challenges was to create a solid image next to the void one, extending the virtual boundary of the design. This was achieved through the clever use of reflection inside the double-layered box. Additionally, distributing light from the bottom to the top without significant reduction posed another obstacle. However, Shih's arrangement of the hurricane pieces successfully addressed this challenge.

Hurricane is not only a testament to Shih's creativity and technical skills but also a recipient of the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category. This accolade recognizes Hurricane as an outstanding and creatively ingenious design that incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. It exemplifies Shih's commitment to improving the quality of life through his innovative creations.

Naai-Jung Shih's Hurricane is more than just a lighting installation; it is a work of art that embodies the beauty of dynamics and statics. With its ability to transform any space into an enchanting realm, Hurricane is a must-have for art enthusiasts and design aficionados alike.
